SWAMPSCOTT — Mark Singer from Swampscott, who suffered a stroke and has since spearheaded a personal mission to inspire others with his recovery journey, will be speaking to community members at the Jewish Community Center of the North Shore Wednesday at 11:30 a.m.
Residents are encouraged to attend the speech series titled “Slowing Down to See Life with Open Eyes,” which is a completely free event. Coffee and bagels will also be served for those who participate.
After initially suffering a stroke while playing golf, Singer explained that he lost feeling on the left side of his body. Since the start of his recovery, he’s taken it upon himself to share his story with others as he continues to fight, where he’s given speeches throughout the North Shore.
“The big takeaway for people is positivity, mindfulness, and to tell people to slow down and celebrate life’s little victories. It’s also about the lessons that I’ve learned throughout my stroke. … Reminding people to slow down, how it helped me in my transformation, all of my progress so far,” Singer said.
He continued, saying that he hopes attendees will gain a fresh outlook on life after hearing about his journey.
“Sometimes, hearing that somebody climbed Mount Everest isn’t always relatable. … This is something that was handed to me, and I had to do the best that I could with it,” Singer said. “Maybe this will help people enhance their lives.”
Aside from aiming to help others look at life through a new pair of eyes, another element that hits home for Singer is connecting with audience members who share their stories with him.
“They tell me when they’re facing health adversities that they found strength in the same lessons that I had,” Singer said. “I always tell them, ‘Don’t wait for health adversity to learn these lessons: enrich your lives today.’”
