In Northeastern Conference action at Blocksidge Field, Swampscott’s football team (3-2) handed Gloucester (5-1) its first loss in a 28-22 final.
Gloucester led, 7-0, after the first quarter, but Will Bush rushed for an 11-yard touchdown in the final minutes of the second quarter.
From there, the big one. Swampscott’s Noah Bascon took the opening kickoff of the second half 90 yards to the promised land.
After a Fishermen equalizer, Swampscott snatched its lead right back when John von Barta connected with Jack Duffy in the third quarter (21-14). Bush extended the Big Blue’s lead to 28-14 with a 17-yard touchdown with less than five minutes remaining in the game.

A 21-point opening quarter was more than enough for St. Mary’s (3-3), which climbed back to .500 with a road win. Rowan Merryman led the offense with three touchdowns, while the defense didn’t allow a score until the fourth quarter. The win ended a three-game losing streak.

Despite Saugus touchdowns from Jordan Rodriguez (interception return) and Paxton Ferraro (60 yards from quarterback Eli Fialho), the Sachems (1-4) fell just short in Salem (3-3). The game was knotted, 6-6, after three quarters.
St. John’s Prep 35

Do-it-all quarterback Christopher Vargas tossed four touchdown passes as St. John’s Prep (5-0) rolled over host BC High. Pierson Scalia caught two touchdowns and St. Mary’s transfer Maxwell Parent rushed for a score.

Fenwick (2-3) took care of business on enemy turf, cruising to victory after leading, 43-0, at halftime. Leading the Crusaders were Dylan Patturelli (6 carries, 119 yards rushing, 3 TDs), and Jamie Dube (receiving TD, punt return TD, interception).

Struggles continued for Lynnfield, which dropped a Cape Ann League battle and fell to 1-4. Coach Pat Lamusta and company return to Pioneer Stadium next Friday against Newburyport at 6 p.m.

Marblehead trailed, 1-0, but responded with goals from Sydney Ball and Callie Gilmore. Lucy Church and Lucy McDonald dished out assists, while Hailey Gilmore made six saves.
