You know what I’ve been thinking? It’s not how you start. It’s . . . well . . . you get it.
Swampscott’s football team could’ve hung its head after a 28-0 loss against St. Mary’s to begin the season. Since then, however, the Big Blue have played true to their name and won three of their next four games.
None were bigger than Friday night’s home-field upset against Gloucester. Swampscott (3-2) won, 28-22, and handed the Fishermen (5-1) their first loss.
Call it a statement win.
“It was a total team effort,” said Swampscott coach Peter Bush. “Our guys showed incredible resiliency and did a great job staying in the moment. Everyone stepped up when it mattered most and I’m proud of the way we competed from start to finish.”
Better yet, Gloucester scored first, but Swampscott didn’t panic.
Will Bush led the Big Blue with 11- and 17-yard rushing touchdowns. John von Barta connected with Jack Duffy for a touchdown pass, and Noah Bascon took the opening kickoff of the second half 90 yards to the house.
Next up for Swampscott is Friday’s home game against Winthrop at 7 p.m. From there, the Big Blue battle with Saugus, Salem, and, of course, Marblehead.
Swampscott, good week.
