The Lynn High School All-City Band will showcase its talents at the State House Holiday Tree Lighting in Boston on Dec. 1 at 5 p.m.
More than 30 student musicians will perform at the celebration, having been invited by the offices of Gov. Maura Healey and Sen. Brendan Crighton. They are expected to play “Jingle Bells” and “Joy to the World,” under the direction of band director Michael Gruender, assistant director Francesca Larson and percussion instructor Jeannie Dunlap.
“The kids are so excited. This is such an amazing honor,” said Julie Carroll, director of music curriculum for Lynn Public Schools. “This doesn’t happen every day.”
The band plays at a variety of events, including football games. They will perform at the Lynn Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony on Dec. 2 on Lynn Common and the Lynn Area Chamber of Commerce Festival of Lights on Dec. 8. The band also conducts a fundraiser in which small groups play and sing carols at homes for a donation that is used to fund scholarships for band members, Carroll said.
“We are very proud of our skilled musicians and excited for them to have the opportunity to perform on this stage,” said Superintendent of Schools Molly Cohen. “Our schools are filled with talented students and dedicated teachers and staff. We’re happy for our band students to display their talents in front of a statewide audience.”
