Saugus Big Y returns after Amazon Fresh falls through

SAUGUS — After years of vacancy at 357 Broadway, Big Y is making its big return to fill in the hole left by the Amazon Fresh store that never opened.

The Amazon Fresh, announced in 2022, was set to be the first of its kind in the region, and many anticipated its opening, though plenty of residents weren’t happy with the addition.

However, the years slowly ticked by with no movement. A banner remained outside reading “Coming Soon,” but “soon” never arrived.

In 2023, it was noted that technology was the reason for the halt. The stores provide an interesting shopping experience where shoppers can use a grab-and-go method called “Just Walk Out.” Customers enter and exit the store with a payment method, bypassing the need for a checkout line.

Big Y has officially announced it will be coming back to its original spot in the Saugus Plaza Shopping Center with a 46,000-square-foot store and a tentative opening for spring or summer of 2026.

“These four new stores represent a significant milestone in Big Y’s ongoing expansion into new towns throughout Massachusetts,” said Michael D’Amour, Big Y’s president and CEO. “With new locations in Pembroke, Saugus, Fairhaven, and North Dartmouth, we’re excited to become a part of new communities that we can serve and create welcoming spaces where customers feel at home.”
