Tony C. Gymnasium in Lynn was home to a high school basketball doubleheader Friday night. The St. Mary’s girls and boys basketball teams welcomed Pope Francis in the Mosakowski Tip-off Classic.
The girls (1-0) cruised to a 53-21 victory behind strong performances from Gabi Lorenzini (19 points) and Sysy Emmanuel (12). Coach Jeff Newhall and company next visit Malden Catholic Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
In coach Josh Keilty’s first game helming the boys program, St. Mary’s (1-0) took care of business in an 81-72 final. The Spartans faced an eight-point halftime deficit before storming back. They were led by John Chareas (25 points) and Rolky Brea Arias, a transfer from Lynn Classical.

In an “incredibly hard-fought game with a ton of guys stepping into new roles and making plays,” according to Lynnfield coach John Bakopolus, his Pioneers fell just short in Newburyport. Lynn Tech (0-1) fell short in their home pool Friday night, but not without strong performances. Hunter Carmody, Isaac Powers, Johndeiry Batista, and Colin Newhall swam well in the medley relay, while Addisyn Brown took first in diving. Carmody recorded first place in the 100m backstroke, while the 200m freestyle relay team of Batista, Newhall, Jadiel Perez, and Brown also placed first.
