Swampscott’s boys basketball team netted a 73-59 home-opening win against Winthrop Tuesday night. Teddy O’Neill was the star of the show, scoring 42 points and burying seven 3-pointers.
Strong defense helped Swampscott build a halftime lead as the Vikings were held to 15 points. Helping the offensive cause were Chase Groothuis (8 points), Connor Chiarello (7), and Sam Moscoso (6).
The Big Blue visit Peabody Friday with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.

Classical (1-0) jumped all over Revere in Lynn. Darren Baker (16 points, 16 rebounds) and Deshawn Rucker (14 points) led the Rams’ charge.
“We fought through some adversity,” said Classical coach Marvin Avery. “In the second half, we just turned it up a notch.”

Also contributing were Cassidy Calef (3 points, 11 rebounds), Mahlyna Williams (12 rebounds, 4 steals), Jaylianniez Beauchamp (2 points, 7 steals), Juliana Gerardo (3 points, 3 rebounds, 4 steals), and Gianna Gallo (3 points, 3 steals).
“Great way to start off the new season,” said Tech coach Kaitlyn Wechsler, fresh off the volleyball season.

Lynnfield (1-1) bounced back from a season-opening loss in style. The Pioneers led 12-5 after the first quarter and never looked back. Hayden Valiton led the way with 12 points, while Chloe Grieves snagged a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.
“Our defense was pretty solid [and] we had 15 steals,” said Lynnfield coach Sue Breen. “We shared the ball well and had 10 assists.”

The Lady Rams (0-1) fell short in Revere despite strong play from Aliyah Alvarado (15 points), Divine Egbuta (14 points, 17 rebounds), and Jada Tejada (11 points).
“The kids played hard and had it cut to three (points) midway through the fourth quarter,” said Classical coach Tom Sawyer. “We just needed to make a few more shots and get a few more stops. Hats off to Revere — they made enough plays to get the win.”

In Classical’s season-opening meet, the Rams fell short despite some “great swims,” according to coach Denise Silva. Jason Silva and Cate Bushway finished second and third, respectively, in the 200 freestyle, while David Gamero placed second in the 200 individual medley. The 50 freestyle saw Henry Limkol take first, while Gamero recorded second place in the 100 fly. Bushway and Kelsey Sinapius finished second and third, respectively, in the 500 freestyle, while Jason Silva snagged first in a “great (100-yard backstroke) race,” as said by Denise Silva. The 400 freestyle relay team of Melvin Lizardo, Solomon Srey, Henry Limkol, and Jason Silva (anchor) also took first.
TRACK AND FIELD
St. Mary’s boys and girls teams took care of business Tuesday evening. The boys (1-0) defeated Cristo Rey 92-0 after a school-record shot put throw from Paolo Meho. Jimmy Jennings performed well in the 300m race. The girls (2-0) clipped Ursuline (70-30 final) and Malden Catholic (84-15) behind first-place performances from Princess-Kailyn Njika (55m), Nina Lopes (1,000m), and Mirabelle Calaunan (55mh).
