Action-packed Friday for high school hockey squads

December 26, 2025 by Joey Barrett

After a few days off for the holidays, high school hockey teams returned to the ice Friday as the Lynnfield, Peabody-Saugus-Swampscott, and St. John’s Prep boys were victorious. Marblehead and the Lynn Jets suffered losses.

In the Michael Giordano ’84 Christmas Classic, Lynnfield defeated Boston Latin 2-0 at Murphy Rink in South Boston. Netminder Angelo Covino stole the show with 28 saves. Lucas Deraps and Nick Kelter ripped twine, while Jackson McShane and Johnny Powers dished out assists.

Next up for the Pioneers (2-1-1) is Saturday’s championship game against Hanover, which defeated Winthrop in the first round of the four-team tournament. Puck-drop is slated for 4 p.m.

In the Lynn Christmas Tournament at Connery Rink, the host Jets (1-2) suffered a 5-2 loss against Peabody-Saugus-Swampscott. Lynn trailed 4-0 after the first period before fighting back.

Jets goals were scored by Joseph Plourde and Kyle Furlong. Denim Dembro and Aaron Cook were facilitators and Nicholas DeNino made 27 saves between the pipes.

Lynn takes on Latin Academy Saturday at 4 p.m. in the consolation game.

St. John’s Prep — with its custom Pete Frates Winter Classic uniforms — handled Boston College High with ease at Essex Sports Center in Middleton. In a 7-0 final, The Prep (2-0-1) punched its ticket to Saturday’s championship game against Pope Francis at 5 p.m.

Talk about offensive versatility. Brandon Ward, JR Goldstein, Luke Horenstein, Owen Hanson, Anthony Petruccelli (2), and Chase Brown scored goals for St. John’s.

Over at O’Maley/Talbot Rink in Gloucester, Marblehead (0-4) had no answer for Medfield (3-1), which cruised to a 5-0 victory in the opening round of the Cape Ann Savings Bank Holiday Hockey Tournament. The Headers look for a consolation victory Saturday at 5 p.m.
