MIDDLETON — A scoreless game after one period, St. Mary’s boys hockey team took a 1-0 lead against St. John’s Prep in the second period, but fell 3-1 inside of Essex Sports Center Saturday.
The Spartans dipped to 3-4, while the Eagles flew to 4-0-2.
After a second-period face-off won by Finn Racki, Colton Carpenter took a shot that was rebounded home by St. Mary’s Evan Toro (1-0).
“The first (period) was pretty even, but we dominated the second,” said St. Mary’s coach Matthew Smith. “We got a power play with a chance to go up 2-0.”
But Logan Daigle, Brennan Waters (game-winner), and Anthony Petruccelli (empty-netter) scored three unanswered goals to put the game away for St. John’s.
“Electric atmosphere and the place was packed. … We talk about growth mindset. We’re not worried about the wins and losses. We want to be prepared for playoff time, and playing these challenging games early on helps us learn these lessons,” Smith said. “One player in particular, Cam Marchand, played like a true Spartan — he blocked at least five shots.”
