NAHANT — All but one lot on the Coast Guard Housing property have been sold, with new homes now under construction on the site, according to Town Administrator Alison Nieto.
Nieto confirmed that the 12th lot on the property still has a tenant and said the Town is currently in litigation with the owner regarding the property.
“There’s one house on Castle Road that’s being built, and another two on Goddard Drive that have building permits, and they’re being constructed also. So, there’s been construction activity, which is good,” she said.
She continued that the Town has received complaints regarding the house that’s being constructed on Castle Road, which some residents have said is too large.
“Some might say that the house on Castle Road is large. We’ve received calls from residents asking if the size of the house falls within zoning regulations, and it does. I think it looks large because the lots next to it are vacant right now,” she said. “The correct building procedures were followed, and the correct building permits have been pulled.”
Nieto said she thinks the project is a positive development for the Town.
“Now that those lots are sold, I’m looking forward to seeing new construction take place and having families move into the area. Then, the Town will see some revenue growth from that,” Nieto said.
She confirmed that the Town has paid off all necessary loans related to the project.
“The loans were paid off at the beginning of this fiscal year. The loan to purchase the property was $1.8 million. Then, all that was outstanding was the amount the Town borrowed for the demolition of the properties, which was $1.3 million. That loan was also paid off,” she said.
She added, “Right now, there’s construction going on and the sidewalk on Castle Road has been closed off. In the Request for Proposal, we said that once the houses on Castle Road were constructed, then the sidewalk would be rebuilt. We had an engineer take a look at it and provide us with a plan. That’s something that still needs to be done.”
