SWAMPSCOTT — Town Administrator Nick Connors announced at Wednesday’s Select Board meeting that the Town is submitting an application for the rehabilitation of the basketball court in Phillips Park, which would be a project slated for FY27.
Connors said the Land and Water Conservation Fund could provide up to 50% of the eligible cost for the project, and that the Town would seek to match that amount with funds from the Community Preservation Committee.
In a follow-up conversation, Director of Community and Economic Development Marzie Galazka said the project will cost close to $120,000, adding that the Town will be seeking approximately $60,000 in grant funding.
She explained that there were cracks and gaps on the pavement surface, and that portions of the fence are missing, which the Town will look to replace.
Galazka also noted that the work would entail installing new gravel, benches, signage, and light fixtures. The Town will also seek to add bike racks and trash receptacles.
Another element that was considered was the addition of a new water fountain with a station for dogs to drink from, though she noted that ultimately it might not be included in the project.
“I know that, in the past, we were able to reseal some of the cracks in the pavement, but right now, with the condition the site is in, it needs some work,” Galazka said. “I think the project will provide a much better opportunity for people to play on the court.”
Galazka reiterated that she feels the project is an opportunity for the Town to seek grant funding to improve its open spaces.
“The project is in line with our open space and recreational plan, and it’s something that shows the Town’s investment in its infrastructures, especially with the assistance of grant funding,” she said.
