From Bulldog to Rebel, Lynn’s Joenel Aguero has committed to Ole Miss after being one of college football’s top names in the transfer portal. Aguero, who played high school football at St. John’s Prep in Danvers, has one year of eligibility remaining.
The 6-0, 205-pound defensive back compiled 80 tackles across three seasons with Georgia, starting 12 games for head coach Kirby Smart this season. He recorded seven tackles (career high) and an interception against Tennessee in September.
Aguero, a housing management and policy major, will suit up for Ole Miss coach Pete Golding, whose team finished 13-2 (7-1 in the Southeastern Conference) with a 9-0 record at Vaught Hemingway Stadium. This season included regular-season wins against Kentucky, Arkansas, LSU, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Florida, and Mississippi State.
The Rebels made noise in the College Football Playoff, too, where they knocked out Tulane 41-10 before eliminating Georgia 39-34. Ole Miss met its match Thursday against Miami in a 31-27 final.
Aguero will join a defensive group that allowed 10 or less points four times this season.
A lockdown defender, he also recorded 35 receptions with 607 yards and 12 touchdowns during his senior season at St. John’s.
