SWAMPSCOTT — When Dr. Barbara Louis Carter turned 100, friends, family, and even former patients joined her at The Residence at Vinnin Square to celebrate the huge milestone.
Born on Dec. 29, 1925, she was raised in Ipswich alongside her brothers, Charles and Frank. She reflected on growing up, saying that it was fun and she had a good time with her siblings. After completing her undergraduate studies at Bates College, Carter attended medical school at Syracuse University and specialized in Radiology.
During her time as a doctor, Carter focused on diagnostics related to brain and neck problems. She was one of the first to utilize the first functioning computed tomography (CT) body scanner devices in Massachusetts, along with an early magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) unit. She worked at Tufts Medical Center as a Radiology Doctor for 45 years.
According to Carter, the best part of her career wasn’t getting to use cutting-edge technology, but instead it was simply being able to help others get better.
She met her husband, Dr. Jeffrey Moore, while she was attending medical school. The two married on Aug. 27, 1960 and bought a house by the ocean in Marblehead.
Carter explained that when they weren’t working, one of their favorite activities was sailing together. She said one of their favorite places to sail was in Massachusetts Bay, noting that it’s one of her fondest memories from that time in her life.
She said the two of them never had children, though her nieces and nephews whom she loves dearly attended her birthday party, and continue to pay her visits.
Nowadays, Carter stays active through numerous activities provided by The Residence at Vinnin Square. These include bingo, cardio drumming, playing games with other residents, and cocktail hour where she socializes with friends and family. She’ll also help design the floral arrangements in the lobby of the building by trimming flowers.
Resident Engagement Director Logan Ferraro explained The Residence of Vinnin Square makes socializing and staying active top priorities for its residents.
“It’s not every day you see someone reach triple digits, and Dr. Barbara makes it look good. During her celebration, we heard stories from former patients who have become friends and then family, who traveled hours to be there, LCB Senior Living associates and private aides who love Barbara as much as any blood relative. We’re incredibly blessed to have such a wonderful resident call Vinnin Square home,” Ferraro said.
