LYNN — Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker said Wednesday that the investigation into the death of Paul Addonizio, who was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer along the Lynnway, is still in its earliest stages and will likely take time to complete.
Addonizio was struck around 6:30 a.m. Monday at the intersection of the Lynnway and Commercial Street. His identity has been confirmed, and investigators have identified the operator of the tractor-trailer involved, Tucker said
According to Tucker, multiple law enforcement agencies are working jointly on the case, including Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the district attorney’s office, State Police detectives from the Danvers barracks, and the State Police Crash Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS), which handles fatal crash investigations.
Investigators are reviewing footage from Lynn city cameras and searching for additional video that may show the moments leading up to the crash. Tucker said the reconstruction process is extensive and involves detailed measurements, roadway analysis, and photographs from multiple angles.
“When CARS comes in, it’s a pretty lengthy process,” Tucker said. “They look at videos, roadway markings, measurements, and shut the roadway down for a period of time so they can document everything properly.”
Tucker emphasized that it is far too early to determine whether the death will ultimately be ruled accidental or if criminal charges could be considered.
“There are so many factors that we have to look at before we make a determination,” he said. “That won’t happen until we receive the full analysis back from the CARS unit and then sit down with the State Police in what we call a protocol meeting.”
Those protocol meetings typically include prosecutors from the district attorney’s office and senior investigators, who review all evidence collectively before deciding how to proceed, Tucker said.
Tucker also acknowledged the strong reaction from the Lynn community following Addonizio’s death, noting that he was a well-known figure in the area.
“This really struck a chord,” Tucker said. “Many people would stop and speak with him, and there’s been a lot of sadness in the community. We’re thinking of the family as well.”
The investigation remains ongoing, and no determinations have been made at this time.
