SWAMPSCOTT — Katy Dupont has been appointed the Town’s new clerk, joining the community after serving in the City of Beverly, where she most recently held the position of assistant city clerk.
Dupont began her career in municipal government in 2019 as an intern with the City of Peabody.
“I started out in municipal government back in 2019 as an intern with the City of Peabody, and I wanted to get into an office,” she said.
After searching for opportunities through the Massachusetts Municipal Association, she joined the Beverly City Clerk’s Office, where she advanced through several roles.
“So I got myself in there and worked up a couple of positions,” she said.
Her interest in election administration deepened during the 2020 presidential election, which took place during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“When COVID was going around, and the whole world was in pandemic mode, and somehow we managed to administer an election and protect people’s fundamental right to vote… that made me really fall in love with the elections,” Dupont said.
As she progressed in her career, Dupont said working as a city or town clerk became a professional goal.
“As I grew in the Beverly City Clerk’s office, and I learned from the City Clerk Lisa (Kent) there, I really learned that this is what I wanted to do in my life, which is work with the municipal government and the clerk’s office and provide the services to the public that the clerk’s office does,” she said.
In her new role, she said, “What I’m looking forward to most right now is the town election and the town meeting.”
She added, “I love elections… and doing the calendar of deadlines, getting ballots, going vote by mail, (and) early voting.”
While the transition from city government to a town structure presents differences, Dupont said it also offers an opportunity to expand her experience.
“I get to learn while still doing what I love and what I know how to do already,” she said. “It’s just really adding to my knowledge and becoming more of a well-rounded clerk.”
Dupont said she is eager to begin working with Town staff and residents.
“I’m very excited. I’m happy to be here, and I’m looking forward to working with the people in town hall, and all the departments, and with the voters and the residents here,” she said.
