Saugus manager salutes essential workers

Elizabeth Della Piana

February 1, 2026 by Elizabeth Della Piana

SAUGUS — Town Manager Scott Crabtree took the time during the last Board of Selectmen meeting to thank the Department of Public Works, Public Safety, and all essential workers for the effort they have been putting in after the heavy snowstorm.

“Obviously, this is a huge storm that we got. We haven’t had this kind of snow in a long time, and I think I was just alerted to the fact that I think they’re saying this is the eighth largest snowfall that we’ve had on record,” Crabtree said.

He also noted that Saugus accumulated slightly more snow than other communities.

“It’s quite an impact on the community, but our public safety and essential workers did, I think, a extraordinary job… We appreciate the residents (and) their patience. Nothing is perfect,” he said.

Crabtree said that the DPW, building maintenance, and public safety were out and continue to be out answering calls around town.

“They’re out doing the best they can do. Obviously, they don’t sleep. They’re up throughout the night. All the communities really struggled with the storm. I’ve had DPW friends that work in other communities that sort of live in Saugus that kind of bragged about how well we managed the storm comparative to other communities around us,” he said.

Crabtree said the work will continue to get done with the widening of the roads and the opening of intersections.

“There’s a lot of work involved, and it’s tough on the residents. There’s a lot of snow. There’s no where to put the snow. We can’t have a front-end loader go to every house in Saugus,” he said.

Crabtree said, if a storm like this happens again, he recommends residents hire private contractors.

“If you have issues, let us know. Contact the DPW. We’ll continue (to) hit some of the issues that are raised… But I just want to commend everybody for all of their efforts,” he said.

The Board also thanked the DPW, public safety workers, and all who helped during the storm.
