SAUGUS — WIN Waste provided an update on the current state of its monofill, detailing the amount of ash that is estimated to be shipped out in the next year to keep the plant active.
The discussion started when Board of Health Vice Chair Joseph Dorant asked about how full the monofill currently was, noting that it could be nearing capacity.
“I mean, it depends on the consistency of the ash. There’s a lot of variabilities that go into the density of the ash, depending on combustion, but we’re also planning to ship more than we shipped previously,” WIN Waste Environmental Compliance Manager Joe Brady said.
Dorant noted that, according to the math he did, 63% of the ash was shipped between January and December of 2025.
“You guys said maybe it could go up to 75%?” Dorant asked, to which Brady said it could potentially be more than that.
“It’s just part of the plan for the monofill to extend our remaining life as long as possible while we work on future steps and next plans, essentially,” Brady said when asked about why they will be shipping more ash.
Plant Manager Elliott Casey also noted that, “We will continue to ship ash and increase the quantity as necessary, as we strive to find a solution with the Town on a mutually beneficial plan for continued use of the monofill that keeps thousands of diesel trucks off the road and provides significant financial resources to the town and state.”
