SAUGUS — Saugus High has named Greg Bluestein its varsity football coach, replacing Steve Cummings.
“This has been something I’ve been working toward professionally for the last 14 years. This has always been the job I’ve dreamed of having when I got into coaching,” said Bluestein, a town native and 2008 SHS graduate. “To be able to go back to the school where I met my wife and give back to the community . . . I’m really looking forward to it. I’m really blessed and really grateful”
Bluestein was an assistant coach for Saugus the last three years. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at Everett High for 11 years.
“We’re going to set really high standards. My goal is for them to leave this program and become the best spouses, parents, and community leaders as possible. It’s very little to do with football, but more about developing the whole person and I think football is a great vessel to do that,” he said. “I’m really excited for the opportunity to get these kids going in the right direction — both on and off the field and in the classroom and the community. I feel like when you do things the right way off the field, the score eventually takes care of itself. Hopefully, we can start making progress in all facets of this”
Bluestein wants his players to know he has their backs.
“I’m in their corner, but that also means holding them to the highest standard possible,” he said. “I want them to be the best versions of themselves and I won’t allow them to fall short of that. I’m going to be demanding, but I’m going to do it with love. I’ve come a long way in terms of my development and I’m excited to continue to push these kids and build those positive relationships.”
Saugus is where he wants to be. On top of calling it a “dream job,” he hopes it’s the one he has for a long time.
“This is my hometown. I live here and was raised here. I feel like football is a great reflection of the community and having a strong culture,” Bluestein said. “I’m just happy to be a small part of it.”
Athletic Director Matt Serino said he’s excited to bring Bluestein aboard.
“We are excited to welcome Coach Bluestein into this role, where his experience, passion, and commitment to excellence will help guide our football program forward,” Serino said.
The Sachems finished 2-9 last season.
