Nahant school superintendent searching for new bus vendor

NAHANT — The School Committee unanimously authorized Superintendent of Schools Robert Liebow to agree with a busing contractor for the transportation of Nahant students.

The district’s current bus contract expires next fall and was previously held for five years, made up of a three-year base contract with two additional years added.

The Committee granted Liebow the ability to enter into a three-year contract with the possibility of adding seven years after the base three-year contract.

Liebow said he is unsure if he would add seven years to the potential new contract, but believes “they’re trying to give you the most ability to negotiate with a potential contractor.”

He added that once a contractor is determined through a bidding process, he will bring the contract to the School Committee for approval.

Bids for bus contractors are due at the end of February and will be discussed at the Committee’s next meeting in March.

“This motion authorized me to just go ahead and do it, but I’m not going to do that. I’d bring it back to the school committee for a vote,” Liebow said.

Per Massachusetts Law, the lowest qualified bidder will gain the town’s contract.

Currently, the town’s bus provider is Healey Bus Inc., a Lynn company. The company will have the opportunity to place a bid, but it is subject to review.
