SAUGUS — The Saugus Prevention Coalition met Monday night to discuss multiple upcoming events, including a vaping prevention night being hosted by the Boys and Girls Club.
The event will be on Feb. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Square One Mall location and is free and open to all. There will also be raffles included.
The event will be used to teach people about the facts on youth vaping, how to spot warning signs, and how to support and talk with children.
The event will also serve as a parent open house, where parents can meet the Club staff, tour the space, and learn about upcoming programs and activities.
One of the Coalition’s founders, Katy Dutille Dos Santos, noted during the meeting that vaping has become a problem at the town’s middle school, which is why it’s so important to share this information.
This isn’t the first time vaping has been addressed; the Students in Action hosted its own vape prevention night.
“There were four students who put together a vaping prevention presentation for middle school students at the Boys and Girls Club, and it went super well. The Students in Action really just took over. They did everything. They didn’t even need me,” Regional Prevention Coordinator Krystal Mellonakos said.
She noted that the students also did role-playing activities to put students in certain situations, like parties or bathrooms, to practice refusal skills.
