For bragging rights in the City of Lynn, St. Mary’s boys basketball team hosted Lynn Tech for a Sunday night Spartan Classic showdown. The Spartans not only defeated the Tigers 80-70, but Jake Fortier joined the 1,000-point club at St. Mary’s.
Fortier netted 23 points, including a walk-in triple from the top of the key to secure his 1,000th. Right with him was Rolky Brea Arias (27 points).
St. Mary’s led 38-24 at halftime, but the third quarter favored Tech, which cut the deficit to single digits (60-51) after three.
The Tigers received a strong performance from Giovanni Jean (24 points).
St. Mary’s takes on Newburyport in Tuesday’s championship game at 7:15 p.m.

In the Larry McIntire IAABO Board 130 Classic, Finn Baron (21) and Cameron Weaver (15) combined for 36 points to lead the host Magicians (12-6), who will play Northeastern Conference rival Gloucester in the championship game Monday at 6 p.m. Ryan Fitzgerald led the Buccaneers (6-13) with 14 points.

In a back-and-forth affair, the Pioneers (12-7) went on a 16-7 run across the final six minutes to seal the deal.
“We had great contributions from lots of players today,” said Lynnfield coach Sue Breen. “I’m really proud of the team for how we competed today. It was such an intense game with lots of momentum swings.”
Olivia Braley (6 rebounds, 4 assists) scored a team-high 16 points. Hayden Valiton (14 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 blocks) and Chloe Grieves (12 points, 18 rebounds) reached double-doubles. Calleigh Caprio made all three of her 3-point attempts, while Maeve Wertz (3 points, steal) and Jordan Calichman (2 points, assist, 2 steals) helped the cause. Breen said Chloe Bergeron and Hannah Doherty played well defensively.

In the Larry McIntire IAABO Board 130 Classic at Marblehead High, Olivia Gaynor and Avery Bettencourt scored 10 points apiece to lead the Tanners (13-6), who will take on Reading in the championship game on Monday at 4:15 p.m. Tessa Andriano had a game-high 17 points for the Magicians (11-8), who play North Andover in the consolation game Monday at 1 p.m.

The Eagles (13-3-2) took care of business in the Derek Hines Memorial Game, played inside of Graf Rink Saturday. Anthony Petruccelli (2 goals), Gavin Anderson (2), Tim McColgan, and Brandon Ward scored for The Prep. Brennan Waters dished out three assists, while Nathan Michaud made 11 saves.

WRESTLING
Behind impressive showings from Jackson Deleidi, Cesar Cruz, Justin Bremberg, Jake Murray, Michael Maraio, and JJ Figueroa, Saugus/Peabody captured the Division 2 North Sectional title. Marblehead/Swampscott’s Liam O’Brien won the 138-pound title. Lynn’s Pablo Maldonado (138) and Omar DeJesus (157) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Northeast Metro/Bishop Fenwick’s Jackson Cody (144) placed third. St. John’s Prep finished third in Division 1 North with James Lally winning the 144-pound title, while Nathan Barstow (120) was Lynnfield/North Reading’s only winner, helping the team place fourth in Division 3.
BOYS SWIMMING AND DIVING
St. John’s Prep tallied 193 points and won the Division 1 state championships at MIT’s Zesiger Pool. Brendan Titley placed second in the 100 free (46.48) and fourth in the 50 free (21.46). Wes Ross placed third in the 200 free (1:44.03) and fifth in the 500 free (4:41.33). Titley, Ben Masterson, Eric Forsyth, and Ross placed second in the 200 free relay (1:27.85). Titley, Declan MacDonald, Brian Desmais, and Ross placed sixth in the 400 free relay (3:17.18).
GIRLS SWIMMING AND DIVING
In the Division 1 state championships, also held at MIT’s Zesiger Pool, Marblehead placed third with 176 points. Hazell Wright, Shaelyn Callahan, Macy Ladouceur, and Winnie Waddington finished the 200 medley relay in 1:54.04. Grace Ladouceur put on a show in the 100 freestyle (54.31). Bishop Fenwick placed 17th as Caroline Blatchford took seventh in the 200 freestyle (2:00.51) and fifth in the 100 freestyle (55.21). Teammate Sarah Shann placed fifth in 1m diving (403.30). Lynnfield placed 15th with 57 points in Division 2. Violet Moreira finished 11th and set a school record in the 100 breaststroke (1:113.01) and also finished 16th in the 100 free (58.29). Sophia Tramontozzi set a school record in the 50 free (26.09), also placing seventh in the 200 free (2:02.30) and 14th in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.80). Tramontozzi, Katie Shrewsbury, Moreira, and Chloe Cieslewicz placed seventh in the 200 free relay and set a school record (1:46.23). Shrewsbury placed 17th in the 50 free (26.30) and Cieslewicz 14th in the 200 free (2:09.70). Moreira, Cieslewicz, Tramontozzi, and Shrewsbury finished 14th in the 200 medley relay (2:02.15).
GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD
Lynnfield competed in the Division 5 state meet in Boston, where the Pioneers (6 points) finished 27th out of 50 teams. Abby Lopez finished 3rd in the 2-mile with a season-best time of 11:42.08. Emma Greenleaf recorded a season-best time of 10.11 in the 55m hurdles, while Sofia Giardina ran the 300m in 45.94.
“It was a great way to end the indoor track season,” said Lynnfield coach Bill Wallace.
