Credit union merger finalized

Erin Hickey

February 22, 2026 by Erin Hickey

Members of the Community Credit Union of Lynn voted to officially approve a merger with the Rockland Federal Credit Union on Jan. 21.

The merger was first proposed in late 2025 with Community Credit Union’s Board Chairman Peter Katsos sending out a December letter urging members to vote to approve the merger.

“This merger is for you, our member,” he wrote. “Unlike bank mergers that are designed to make money for stockholders, this merger will result in a wider variety of competitive services, products, and conveniences.”

Leaders from Community Credit Union cited a variety of reasons for the merger, including improved services and offerings for lenders. The maximum loan the Lynn-based credit union could make before the merger was $2 million, as federal law typically restricts credit unions lending limits as a proportion of their actual net worth or asset value. The merged credit entity now boasts nearly $3.6 billion in assets, increasing that lending limit significantly.

Community Credit Union Attorney Thomas C. Demakis said pressures in complying with financial regulations were also another factor.

“It costs a lot of money to comply,” he explained.

Smaller credit unions throughout the country are struggling to meet the same loaning protection standards as larger institutions with more resources.

Rockland Federal Credit Union is now the second largest credit union in Massachusetts, behind Digital Federal Credit Union in Marlborough. Leaders of both credit unions say the larger institution will provide upgraded services for members beyond expanding lending limits.

Technological capacity was a major factor in Community Credit Union’s decision to merge, recognizing the need for more easily accessible web based services, particularly for younger members of the digital age. Part of the draw for Community Credit Union was Rockland Federal’s online services. Its larger share of resources allows for more user-friendly developments, particularly the costly kinds that come with security and online banking.

Members of the Community Credit Union received a letter this week from Kristin VanBeek, the CEO of the Rockland Federal Credit Union, welcoming them to the South Shore-headquartered institution. Community Credit Union will legally operate as Rockland Federal Credit Union beginning on Feb. 26.

The letter contained a new consumer fee schedule. It also offers a promise of additional benefits to come. Several member fees have already been decreased with the merger.

Branches serving members in Lynn, Peabody, and Somerville will remain open. VanBeek said members can expect the familiarity of a “team you know and trust,” implying the Rockland Credit Union intends to retain Community Credit Union employees.

The notice also stressed the two credit union’s shared commitment to community-focused success and member services.

“Our commitment to you remains the same,” VanBeek wrote. “This merger allows us to build on the strengths of both organizations while expanding the benefits and resources available to you.”
