LYNN — An aging Lynn landmark is among the images earning top honors in this year’s Essex Heritage photo contest.
The annual contest, organized by the Essex National Heritage Commission, invites photographers of all skill levels to document the landscapes, architecture, and everyday moments that define the Essex National Heritage Area.
Ken Jordan took first place in the “Around Town” category for his picture, “Art Deco General Edwards Bridge,” photographed in Lynn.
Jordan, a retired carpenter, is not a professional photographer, but the hobby has been a part of his life for many years.
“I always liked nature,” he said. “And someone told me about the Greater Lynn Photographic Association, so I joined. And it was the best thing I ever did.”
Jordan enters the Essex Heritage contest every year and has won multiple times — even taking home the contest’s grand prize. He said he has a particular interest in architecture. His winning image this year features the General Edwards Bridge, a structure he has long admired.
“I like the old bridge, and I know it’s going to be torn down,” he said. While walking around the City with his camera, he noticed the interplay of light and shadow on the bridge’s Art Deco details. He took the shot and liked the result.
He is being recognized for capturing the distinctive character of Essex County, showcasing “the beauty, character, and everyday magic of Essex County through the eyes of the people who know it best.”
The 15 winning photographs will be on display at the Salem Armory Visitor Center during a public exhibit running from March through April. A free reception honoring the winners will be held Wednesday, March 11 at 5:30 p.m.
