SAUGUS — High school senior and Saugus guard Peyton DiBiasio was honored at Tuesday night’s Board of Selectmen meeting, where she received a citation for breaking Saugus Middle High School’s basketball all-time scoring record.
The record, set in 1966, was broken on Jan. 29 when DiBiasio hit 1,611 points in her career.
Selectmen Chair Debra Panetta introduced DiBiasio and her family, noting that the Board was thrilled to have her at the meeting and that she had reached a huge achievement.
Selectman Mike Serino started the congratulations off.
“I happened to be there that night to watch you break the record, and I want to congratulate you. You must come from good, talented basketball parents,” he said.
Selectman Jeff Cicolini noted that the best part of it all for DiBiasio is that she’s talented in multiple sports.
“It’s not like basketball is the only one. It’s truly remarkable knowing that you started your varsity career as an eighth grader. To know that you not only broke the women’s basketball record, but you broke the all-time points record, I think that’s truly exceptional,” Cicolini said.
He said he was excited to see the next steps in DiBiasio’s career and see where she chooses to go for college.
“I’ve had the pleasure of knowing the DiBiasio family for quite some time. I coached her brother when he was little. Another great athlete. We always knew you’d be good, Peyton, but you are phenomenal,” Selectmen Vice Chair Anthony Cogliano said.
Cogliano said the record-breaking game was “excellent.”
“It’s amazing. You’re a phenomenal athlete, and (you have) great parents. Make sure you thank them and give them a hug because they’ve been dedicated to their children and you for their whole life. It’s just an amazing accomplishment,” Town Manager Scott Crabtree said.
He noted that everyone was thrilled that she was representing the town.
“It was exciting to see you break the record that night. We were all there cheering you on,” Panetta said.
