LYNN — With construction on South Harbor set to begin in September, the City of Lynn has received $200,000 through the Healey-Driscoll Administration’s Municipal and Tribal Technical Assistance grant program.
In early February, the Healey-Driscoll Administration announced $1,939,250 in grant awards, which will support infrastructure projects in communities across Massachusetts. Now, Lynn is the latest to receive a portion of that funding.
“Our waterfront is one of Lynn’s greatest assets, and this technical assistance funding is the spark we need to further ignite its development,” Mayor Jared C. Nicholson said. “This program allows us to advance our residents’ goals in the City’s South Harbor Implementation Plan (SHIP) and other planning efforts through a strategic approach to urban renewal that will benefit our residents for generations to come.”
The South Harbor Implementation Plan Project (SHIP) was created in 2023 and is set to be the largest investment in the City’s history. The $500 million project will completely transform the neighborhood and waterfront into an 8-acre public park. The EDIC Board recently asked the public for their interest in additions to the recreational space, including a stage for performances and swings.
The grant will help support the shoreline restoration and help lay the “groundwork for a stronger waterfront that supports housing, recreation, environmental restoration, and economic growth,” Rep. Dan Cahill said. Work on the building itself will likely begin next year.
The state has also approved an $8 million grant program, through MassWorks, for the next three years, which marks a $24 million commitment to the project as well.
“We are grateful for the Healey-Driscoll Administration’s partnership, which once again demonstrates a commitment to helping communities reach their potential,” Rep. Sean Reid said. “This award strengthens Lynn’s capacity to pursue initiatives related to the South Harbor and improves the City’s ability to create long-term environmental and economic benefits for our residents.”
