Upsets, standouts highlight Lynn elementary tournament

LYNN — After a week of pool-play games, the 48th Annual Lynn Elementary Basketball Tournament quarterfinals tipped off Friday night at Thurgood Marshall Middle School. Action continued Saturday.

In Division 1 girls action, No. 5 Connery defeated No. 4 Cobbet 9-6. The Quetzales ended the game on an 8-0 run to secure the victory. Caroline Rosario Ramirez led Connery with six points, while Ashley Mervin Val and Kaylin Lopez Guillen each scored baskets for Cobbet. Connery will face top-seeded Drewicz Wednesday at 4:40 p.m.

In the second Div. 1 girls game, No. 3 Ingalls defeated No. 6 Hood 12-3. The Rockets led wire-to-wire behind five points from Marileny Rodriguez. Kennedy Thomson scored three points for the Hood Hawks. Ingalls will take on No. 2 Harrington Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

In Div. 3 girls play, No. 4 Lincoln-Thomson defeated fifth-seeded Aborn behind six points from Jaliyah Graham. Riley Levangie was Aborn’s leading scorer. Lincoln-Thomson advanced to face top-seeded Shoemaker Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Friday’s final game saw No. 3 Ford defeat No. 6 Brickett 10-4 in a Div. 2 girls matchup. Scarleth Cash led Ford with six points, while Jaleesa Amarante added four. Dafne Ducoundray was the leading scorer for Brickett. Ford will face No. 2 Sisson Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Tournament play continued Saturday morning, full of surprises and upsets.

In Div. 2 girls action, fourth-seeded Callahan defeated fifth-seeded Tracy 7-4. Zoey Hinton and Olivia Fowler each scored two points to lead Callahan, while Nazrah Ssali and Nylla Hios had two points apiece for Tracy. Callahan advanced to face top-seeded Washington Thursday at 4:40 p.m.

In Div. 1 boys play, sixth-seeded Connery pulled off a 15-7 upset against third-seeded Cobbet. Isaiah Velasquez led Connery with five points. Cobbet was led by Frandy Garcon and Kendrick Vargas Macario, each of whom scored two points. Connery takes on second-seeded Harrington Friday at 4:40 p.m.

Another Div. 1 boys matchup saw fourth-seeded Drewicz defeat fifth-seeded Hood 37-22. Jorge Lopez led Drewicz with 17 points. Miguel Gomez Morales scored six points and Yuri De Jesus added five for Hood. Drewicz will face top-seeded Ingalls Friday at 3:30 p.m.

In Div. 2 boys action, sixth-seeded Callahan upset third-seeded Sisson 27-21. Jeremiah Jerome Spence scored five of his team-high nine points in the final two minutes to help seal the victory for Callahan. Travis Em led Sisson with nine points, while Carter Touch added four. Callahan advanced to play second-seeded Washington Thursday at 5:50 p.m.

Fifth-seeded Tracy also advanced in Div. 2 boys play with a 26-12 win against fourth-seeded Brickett. Johan Lobo led Tracy with a tournament-high 18 points. Emilio Rodriguez and Raymon Deihl-Butterworth scored four points apiece for Brickett. Tracy will face top-seeded Ford Thursday at 7 p.m.

In Saturday’s final game, fifth-seeded Lynn Woods defeated fourth-seeded Lincoln-Thomson 20-11 in Div. 3 boys play. Kolin Mace led Lynn Woods with 15 points, while Max Huynh and Christian Ramos scored four points apiece for Lincoln-Thomson. Lynn Woods will take on top-seeded Shoemaker Friday at 7 p.m.

Semifinal rounds begin Wednesday at Thurgood Marshall Middle School.
