LYNNFIELD — Thirty-four recruits from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy’s Call/Volunteer Recruit Firefighter Training Program graduated at the middle school Tuesday night, including two Lynnfielders: Niko Panagopoulos and Vincent Ferullo.
“The Massachusetts Firefighting Academy trains more than 14,000 firefighters at every level, from chief officers to the recruits we’re here to honor this evening,” Recruit Training Coordinator Dean Babineau said.
State Fire Marshal John Davine was then introduced and gave his remarks for Call/Volunteer Recruit Class #123.
“Tonight, we gather to celebrate this pivotal moment as these recruits become Massachusetts firefighters. Class #123, let me be the first to welcome you to the best job in the world,” Davine said.
He continued that he credits the academy for the opportunities to develop his skills, expand his knowledge, and challenge himself.
“Together, we will protect our communities through professionalism, dedication, integrity, and training,” he said.
Davine noted that more than two-thirds of the communities in the Commonwealth are protected by call or volunteer firefighters.
“You are vital to the fire service and a key partner in keeping our community safe,” he said.
Davine highlighted the importance of training, asking questions, and attending conferences to continue learning.
“Gone are the days of firefighters just battling fires. This is an all-hazards occupation. It will challenge you to think on your feet and solve real-world problems under the most difficult conditions,” he said.
Davine listed out the vast number of calls firefighters have to go on, from car accidents to fire drills at schools.
“Firefighting is not for the faint of heart, but it is deeply rewarding, honorable, and exhilarating. You’ll never ever be bored or lonely. You’ll work as a team, you’ll become a family, and you will forge friendships that will last a lifetime. So, thank you Class #123 for answering the call to serve,” he said.
