LOWELL — Fresh off winning the 165-pound Central New England Golden Gloves title, Saugus boxer Sam LoRusso has captured gold once again. He recently won a 4-1 split decision against Samuel Mbemba to capture the 165-pound Middleweight All-New England Golden Gloves title.
LoRusso (Saugus High ’24), who recorded 100-plus wins with Saugus/Peabody’s co-op wrestling team, has cemented himself quite a combat sports legacy in Saugus — and beyond.
“To go and place at New Englands in wrestling and two years later, win the New England in boxing is quite cool,” said boxing coach Mike Penta, who also coached LoRusso as a high school wrestling assistant. “In typical Sam LoRusso fashion, it was all gas, no brakes, and constant action. … Sam brings a certain grit, toughness, and will to win that you can’t teach. I believe in him just as much as he believes in me. We make a plan, we train, and he executes it. I don’t have to tell him much; less is more with him. He just figures it out and finds a way to execute and win.”
LoRusso was also named Outstanding Notice Fighter.
