Saugus Committee looks to put education first

Elizabeth Della Piana

March 12, 2026 by Elizabeth Della Piana

SAUGUS — Superintendent Michael Hashem discussed nine articles related to the Student Support Fund that the school plans to include in the warrant for Town Meeting this year.

The articles would include English Language Learning tutoring services, athletic and tutoring services, the Belmonte STEAM Academy, the middle school, and Veterans Learning Center to continue the enrichment programs, science curriculum implementation at the STEAM Academy, behavioral specialist implementation funding, a tutoring hub at the high school, and an elective class funding at the high school.

“It’s going to be a very challenging year with budgets. We know that. So, what we’re trying to do is we as a group we all believe that education is our priority. It’s not worrying about the bills and everything else… The kids are always the ones that end up suffering,” Chair Thomas Whittredge said.

Hashem said that these are all areas that need support.

“This goes directly to the students, this type of support,” Whittredge said.

He continued that the Committee is all in on education and that the articles are still being looked over legally to ensure they are where they need to be before being presented to the public.
