MARBLEHEAD – As Marblehead Public Schools continues to navigate a challenging financial landscape, one of its top administrators is now in the spotlight for a potential new role.

Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations Michael J. Pfifferling is among two finalists for the business manager position at Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School, with interviews scheduled for Wednesday night.

Pfifferling, who joined Marblehead in June 2024 after serving as assistant superintendent in Haverhill Public Schools, has played a central role in the town’s ongoing budget discussions, work that has defined much of his tenure so far.

In recent weeks, Pfifferling has been at the forefront of efforts to close a significant funding gap facing the town and its schools. Marblehead officials have been grappling with a multimillion-dollar deficit, necessitating difficult decisions on spending, staffing, and long-term financial planning.

At a recent School Committee meeting, Pfifferling outlined the complexities behind the numbers, including pension obligations and other post-employment benefits that continue to strain the budget.

“We’re trying to work today, but we’re paying off the debt from the past,” he said, describing how current funds are often used to cover prior liabilities.

He also urged caution as town officials pushed for an additional $1.5 million in school cuts, questioning whether the financial data supporting that figure had been fully vetted.

“I think this is a great idea — if the data were substantiated,” Pfifferling said, warning that even small inaccuracies could have major consequences for staffing and classrooms.

That careful, analytical approach reflects Pfifferling’s broader philosophy on school finance, shaped by nearly 15 years working in district leadership roles.

“School finance is a challenging field,” he said in a recent interview. “It always comes down to what’s available for funding and what we need to make it meet our students’ needs. Those two typically don’t match up.”

He added that funding constraints are a universal issue across districts, noting that “it’s always a challenge to educate our students and meet their needs with the limited funding available.”

In Marblehead, that reality has played out in real time, as district leaders work through both immediate cuts and long-term financial obligations.

Pfifferling is now being considered for the top financial role at Whittier Tech, where longtime business manager Kara Kosmes is set to retire after 13 years. The position carries a salary range of $165,000 to $180,000 and involves overseeing finances for a regional school district serving multiple communities.

Also in the running is Angus Jennings, who currently serves as West Newbury’s town manager and is also a finalist for the same role in Ipswich.

Pfifferling said he was not actively seeking a new position but was encouraged by colleagues to apply.

“I wasn’t looking,” he said. “I was approached… people reached out to me and said this would be a great fit.”

He noted that the opportunity at Whittier Tech is appealing both professionally and personally, particularly with the potential for a new school building project and a significantly shorter commute.

“Whittier is looking at potentially building a new facility… so that would be an exciting opportunity,” he said.

Currently commuting 45 to 50 minutes each way from Groveland, Pfifferling said the Whittier role would bring him much closer to home.

Despite that, he emphasized his appreciation for his current role.

“I really enjoy Marblehead… it’s been a great work environment,” he said. “If it doesn’t work out, I’m very happy with my position.”

For Marblehead, Pfifferling’s candidacy raises the possibility of a leadership transition at a time when financial stability is a top concern. His work has been closely tied to the district’s response to budget pressures, including evaluating benefit costs, debt obligations, and revenue limitations.

The Whittier Tech School Committee is scheduled to interview finalists on Wednesday, March 25, at 6:30 p.m. at the school located at 115 Amesbury Line Road, Haverhill.
