PEABODY — The Historical Commission voted to prioritize eight cemeteries to be restored in 2026 and 2027 among the approximately 40 small, historic cemeteries in Peabody.
The four for 2026 are: Jacobs Family Cemetery off Lowell Street, Curtis-Very Cemetery on Lynn Street, Needham Cemetery on Rose Circle, and Doughty Cemetery on Route 1. The four for 2027 are: Russell Old Burial Ground off Russell Street, Brown Burial Ground on Nichols Lane, Flint Burial Ground on LeBlanc Drive, and Needham Cemetery on Goodale Street.
According to Chairman Jeff Budd, the cemeteries listed were chosen after discussing various criteria, including: visibility, veterans, history, and size.
“We’re trying to get a better handle on our cemeteries,” Budd said, noting that there have been issues in the past with vandalism, desecration, homeless encampments, theft, and overall cleanliness.
Budd added that the Historical Commission has formerly contracted Epoch Preservation, a gravestone conservation business based in Ipswich, to assist with cleaning and repairing headstones. Budd expects to partner with Epoch Preservation once again.
Additionally, Superintendent of City Cemeteries Dave Cronin announced that there will be spring clean-ups beginning on Monday, March 30 at Cedar Grove Cemetery and Oak Grove Cemetery, weather permitting.
