Aggregate quarry hits 50% capacity in Saugus

SAUGUS — During Tuesday night’s Board of Selectmen meeting, where Attorney Richard Magnan asked for an extension of the Aggregate Industries special permit, Selectman Michael Serino noted that the quarry was now at 50% capacity.

The reclamation project for the quarry was announced in 2017 and labeled a 15-year project that would fill more than 30 acres.

“(This is a) semiannual application for blasting and the operation of a quarry, which we know is not being operated as a quarry,” he said.

Magnan noted that the company would like to preserve the permit, as there are plans for a small blast in October.

Magnan also mentioned the post-closure committee, mentioning that the last meeting was in May of 2025, and he assumed another meeting would occur this year.

“I’ve been on that committee for many years now. We just got a recent report about three weeks ago that the capacity… The quarry is filled up to 50%. We’re halfway there. Another seven more years,” Serino joked.

Magnan mentioned that the last time he was here the capacity had reached 43%.

Selectmen Chair Debra Panetta asked if there had been any trucking issues. Magnan responded that there were none to his knowledge.

The Board voted unanimously to allow the extension of the special permit.
