NAHANT — A man was arrested at approximately 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning in Nahant for several motor vehicle and weapons charges.
Chief Timothy M. Furlong told The Daily Item that a man was driving around the town going nearly double the speed limit. Sgt. Heather Leary was on a routine patrol when she observed that the vehicle was going over the posted speed limit of 25 miles per hour and clocked that it was actually going 40 miles per hour, which led to a vehicle stop. After discovering that the vehicle did not have insurance and that the operator was driving with a suspended driver’s license, he was then arrested.
Prior to the vehicle getting towed, Furlong said an inventory was conducted, which is when they discovered that a fully loaded 9 mm firearm was located underneath the driver’s seat.
“The operator admitted to having [it] and also carrying illegally without a permit,” Furlong explained.
The man, who Furlong said only had a Tennessee ID card, was charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, an uninsured motor vehicle, speeding at a rate of excess of the posted speed limit, improper storage of a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, and possessing ammunition without an FID card.
The Nahant Police Department posted photos of the firearm on Facebook Monday. The news might come as a surprise initially to residents living in the town.
“It’s definitely a rarity in town, but it does happen,” Furlong admitted. “The reason for the post is just to let people know that it does happen. It was like 1:30 in the morning, and he’s driving around our town for what reason, carrying a gun. That’s concerning.”
