To the editor:
I am a proud grandmother who joined with Peabody citizens aged 3 to 83 to show up in Peabody Square and participate in one of thousands of “No Kings” peaceful protests across the nation. Though I arrived by myself, I never felt alone as I spoke with others nearby and listened to their concerns about the decisions made by the current administration and the direction this country is taking in the eyes of the world.
I am sure everyone in attendance on this chilly Saturday in March had many other things they needed to do, but we prioritized taking the time to express our concerns publicly. Most drivers passing by the busy square signaled their support with honks, thumbs up, and friendly waves. I was saddened but not shocked to hear several cars drive by with passengers screaming antisemitic swears at the protesters.
Likewise, I have read many disparaging comments about the protesters posted anonymously on community Facebook pages, which I no longer choose to follow. What makes some people so intimidated by peaceful protests that they respond with hateful rhetoric? Have the courage to voice your beliefs with respect and dignity. Thank you to The Daily Item and Peabody Weekly News for covering this important event.
