MARBLEHEAD — The High School roof project is underway with major construction beginning after the last day of school, which is expected to be on June 23.
The project was discussed at the Marblehead High School Roof Subcommittee meeting on April 2.
Leena Long, senior project manager for LeftField, said a majority of the project must be completed before the beginning of the next academic year.
“Really, it’s just nine weeks; it’s a summer slammer, as some folks call it in the industry. And you know then that we know the first day of school for students, for staff, is Aug. 26, and then for students is Aug. 31,” she said.
She added that the early stages of the construction process will involve removing existing classroom ceilings to make room for work above them.
Over April break, work will be done on the smaller, non-HVAC roof sections without bringing in a crane.
The HVAC contractor for this project will be the Salem-based E. Amanti & Sons.
A roofing contractor has not been selected yet, due to differing procurement processes.
“We’re praying for good weather over April break, because they really want to get as much done as they can that week in advance of school getting out in June,” Long said.
Additionally, Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) screening has begun for contracted employees, Long said. The contractor, Homer, based in Arlington, must submit CORI applications for all on-site employees.
In February, the Marblehead Municipal Light Department worked to plan for the protection of electrical lines around the concessions stand at the High School.
