LYNN — Ahead of May’s Doug Mullins Memorial Baseball Tournament, in its fifth year, there will be a fundraiser this Saturday at Gannon Municipal Golf Course from 5-9 p.m. The 19th Hole will be open with plenty of raffles, merchandise, and camaraderie to go around.
The high school baseball tournament was established in 2022 to honor the former Lynn English baseball coach, who made a lasting impact on the lives of student-athletes before losing his battle with osteosarcoma in 2020 at age 34.
“Please join us in supporting a meaningful cause that helps shape the academic future of selected local seniors, while honoring the memory of a great coach, friend, son, brother, cousin, and truly stand-up guy,” stated the Doug Mullins Memorial Baseball Tournament Committee. “Thank you for continuing to support our local athletes and for helping us preserve Coach Mullins’ legacy and memory in the community he loved.”
The tournament features the varsity teams of Lynn English, Lynn Classical, St. Mary’s, and Swampscott. It continues Mullins’ legacy by providing high-level competition and essential financial support to local seniors.
More than $16,000 in scholarships have been awarded to student-athletes since the organization’s inception.
St. Mary’s has won all four Mullins tournaments. Last season, the Spartans defeated Swampscott 3-1. Jack Zimmerman was named Most Valuable Player after striking out 13 batters. Nate Cutone and Josh Doney also played well for St. Mary’s, while Swampscott’s Nick Berube, Adam Sparacio, and Michael Collins contributed on the other side.
