BOSTON — Not many traditions last 130 years, but this one just keeps running. As fans cheered and the Red Sox took care of nearby business (8-6 win against the Tigers), 130 local runners competed in Monday’s Boston Marathon. An approximate 34,000 runners registered for the 26.2-mile race.
On a day that started in the 30s but warmed to 45 degrees by the race’s start, Swampscott’s Stephen Bennett was the top local finisher with a time of 2:35:52. Also finishing in less than three hours were Marblehead natives Liam Hill (2:49:52), Ava Mahoney (2:52:37), and Scott Snyder (2:41:21), Peabody’s Shannon O’Connell (2:57:19), Saugus’ Christopher Chapruet (2:52:18), as well as Swampscott natives Ethan Cadorette (2:42:55), Carl Dooley (2:56:39), Trevor Henry (2:57:19), and Colin Smith (2:36:21).
Winthrop’s Paul Caruccio, 71, was the oldest local runner to enter. The youngest was Winthrop 19-year-old Shannon Abbott, who finished in 4:16:23.
Talk about a busy day. Andover’s Dan Koh, 41, who’s running for a spot in Massachusetts’ 6th Congressional district, finished in 3:05:48 before door-knocking in Lynn. He was the Deputy Assistant to President Joe Biden and Deputy Director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs.
Nahant’s Ellen Goldberg, who completed the Boston Marathon 15 times heading into Monday, finished in 5:18:56.
Lynnfield’s Bryan Mallett ran in memory of Sharla Sieve, who died Dec. 7, 2022 from stage 4 metastatic colorectal cancer. With money raised for Massachusetts General Hospital’s Hepatic Arterial Infusions Program, Mallett clocked in a time of 3:29:50.
Lynn’s Michael Carroll ran for Special Olympics Extra Mile and finished in 3:52:35. As a child, Carroll participated in Lynn Parks and Recreation programs before setting school records at St. Mary’s.
Peabody’s Sydney Southern, who relearned how to walk after being diagnosed with a giant cell tumor, finished in 5:11:37. She also ran for Mass General.
YMCA of Metro North CEO/President Kathleen Walsh, 60, of Lynnfield, finished in 4:21:42. Her son, Francis, of East Boston, finished in 3:15:36. Francis started 21 minutes after Kathleen, but caught up with her at the 8-mile mark. “My son dusted me,” Kathleen joked.
Defending champion John Korir, of Kenya, smashed the course record with a blistering time of 2:1:52. Korir separated himself from the pack as it headed toward Newton’s Heartbreak Hill; Boston Bruins Hall of Famer Zdeno Chara finished in 3:18:00, surpassing his 2024 time by more than 12 minutes; former first daughter Chelsea Clinton finished in 3:40:52.
