PEABODY — After 10 years in business, The NexMex Thing, a Mexican restaurant located at 5 Central St., will be closing its doors in downtown Peabody to relocate to Lynn due to the ongoing road work on Central Street. The restaurant’s last day open will be April 30, and it will be moving to 125 Lynnfield St. in Lynn in early June.
The restaurant’s announcement stated that this decision was not made lightly and was heavily impacted by the Central Street road closures.
“The prolonged road work in the area… has significantly impacted accessibility to our restaurant. The resulting detours and street closures ultimately forced us to discontinue lunch service and made it increasingly difficult to operate sustainably,” the announcement read.
The approximately $20 million Central Street Improvement Project began in the spring of 2024 and is projected to require another few years before the work is finished.
The Central Street reconstruction project includes new road surface, sidewalks and curbs, crosswalks, traffic signals, and modern design amenities that will improve traffic flow, accessibility, and safety.
“While this chapter is coming to a close, our connection to Peabody remains strong,” the announcement read, adding that The NexMex Thing will be actively looking for opportunities to return to Peabody in the near future. Also, The NexMex Thing’s sister restaurant, Pots, located at 77 Main St., will remain open.
With The NexMex Thing’s last day in business on Central Street being April 30, the restaurant is asking community members to come by and show support by grabbing a last meal at the Peabody location before the temporary closure.
“We are deeply grateful to the people of this community for welcoming us, supporting us, and allowing us the honor of serving you over the years,” the announcement read. “It has truly meant everything to us and our family… Thank you for a decade of memories, support, and community. We hope to serve you again soon.”
