LYNNFIELD — Firefighters returned Friday morning to a Melody Lane home less than a day after a four-alarm fire had heavily damaged the property when a second fire reignited in the basement.
Crews responded to 3 Melody Lane at about 10:40 a.m. after reports of smoke coming from the home. Thursday’s fire was initially reported as a possible gas leak.
Firefighters remained at the scene overnight before leaving after believing the fire was extinguished. Upon returning Friday, crews removed plywood from boarded-up windows to re-enter the home and put out the rekindled fire.
It was reported that Chief Glenn Davis said the active fire in the basement was in an area that crews were unable to reach on Thursday.
The Thursday fire included firefighters from Lynn, Peabody, Reading, Saugus, and Wakefield, joining Lynnfield in containing the blaze.
On Thursday, an emergency advisory from the Lynnfield Center Water District warned residents about possible low water pressure and discoloration due to heavy firefighting water usage.
The advisory stated that residents in the Essex Street corridor from Midland Street to the Peabody line, along with the Grant neighborhood, Jordan, Currie, Evans, Essex Village, and surrounding streets, could experience discolored water and fluctuating pressure.
Officials advised residents to run cold water — preferably from an outside spigot — until clear, and to avoid using hot water, dishwashers, or washing machines while discoloration persists.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
