LYNNFIELD — Lynnfield High Athletic Director Mia Muzio is going home.
In a letter to the Lynnfield community, Muzio said she was leaving to accept the position of Director of Athletics, Intramurals and Extracurricular Activities at Rockport High, from which she graduated in 2007.
“This decision was not an easy one because Lynnfield has become so much more than a workplace to me. It has been a community that welcomed me, challenged me, and allowed me to grow both professionally and personally,” Muzio stated. “However, this opportunity brings me back to my hometown and to the school system that helped shape who I am today as a proud Rockport High School graduate. Most importantly, it is the right decision for my family at this stage of our lives.”
Lynnfield High Principal Patricia Puglisi said the position has been posted internally within Lynnfield Public Schools as well as externally on SchoolSpring, an online job board and recruitment platform. An interview committee consisting of two parents, two students, two coaches, and two administrators is in the process of being established. First-round interviews are scheduled for the week of July 19. Finalists will participate in a second round of interviews with Puglisi, Superintendent of Schools Tom Geary, and Assistant Superintendent Adam Federico with the goal of having a new athletic director in place by the beginning of August.
“We are grateful for all that Ms. Muzio accomplished during her tenure at Lynnfield High School,” Puglisi said. “Through her leadership, she strengthened our athletic program, expanded opportunities for student-athlete leadership, and helped foster a culture of sportsmanship and excellence. We sincerely thank her for her dedication to our students and school community and wish her continued success as she returns to her alma mater.”
Muzio was originally hired as the Director of Athletics and K-12 Physical Education, Health and Wellness Coordinator for Lynnfield Public Schools in 2022 after serving as athletic director at Wilmington High.
She said that serving as Lynnfield’s athletic director has “truly been one of the greatest privileges of my career.
“I have had the opportunity to witness incredible accomplishments, unforgettable moments of competition, and, most importantly, the tremendous character of our student-athletes,” she said. “Their dedication, resilience, and commitment to representing Lynnfield with pride have inspired me every day. To our student-athletes, thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your journeys. Your hard work, leadership, and passion for your teams have made this job incredibly rewarding.”
Muzio thanked parents and guardians for their support and “the trust you placed in me and our athletic department. The success of our programs is a direct reflection of the commitment and care you show your children and our community.”
She also thanked coaches, faculty, the Department of Public Works, and the Lynnfield community for providing “exceptional experiences” for student-athletes.
“Together, we have celebrated championships, overcome challenges, and continued to build a culture that places students at the center of everything we do,” Muzio said. “I will forever be grateful for the relationships and memories created during my time in Lynnfield. The lessons I’ve learned and the people I’ve met here will stay with me throughout my career and my life.”
She also said leaving Lynnfield is “bittersweet.
“This community has left a lasting mark on me, and I will always cheer for the Pioneers and celebrate the continued success of Lynnfield Athletics,” Muzio said. “Thank you for making my time here so meaningful. It has truly been an honor and a pleasure to serve this incredible community.”
Muzio, 32, graduated from Rockport High in 2007. She played three years of field hockey, served as captain and, during her senior year, was named the team’s MVP and selected to the Cape Ann League All-Conference team and Massachusetts All-State team. She also played softball.
She played field hockey at Ithaca College, where she was named to the All-Empire League All-Conference Second Team her junior and senior years.
Muzio started coaching after graduating from Ithaca. She was the head field hockey coach at North Reading High from 2013-16, compiling a record of 27-51-5, which included a state tournament appearance in 2015. That year, the team finished 8-9-2, including a first-round tournament loss to Ipswich. It was the first playoff appearance for the program since 2011.
