NAHANT — The Harbormaster’s office will begin tagging illegal moorings during August, police officials said in a statement posted to Facebook.

Moorings not renewed will be considered illegal and removed at the owner’s expense. They will be in the possession of the Harbormaster’s office until claimed by the owner or disposed of, according to the statement.

Harbormaster Mariana Rauworth said mooring applications “were due by June 30th, so it’s just the last warning for the small handful that just have not done that yet.”

The town is still accepting applications submitted through Nahant.org. Printed applications should be submitted to the Selectman’s Office at 334 Nahant Road, identified with “Attention Harbormaster” written on the envelope, according to the town’s website.

For mooring, residents are required to pay a fee of $4 per foot, and for non-residents, $6 per foot.

If someone does not submit their mooring application, “we then would tag [the mooring], and it would be put on a list for removal, and we would remove the mooring,” Rauworth said.

There are three mooring areas in Nahant: Bass Point, Nahant Harbor, and “a handful” in the Lynn Harbor mooring field, according to Rauworth
