An eight-point hole was no problem for Peabody’s girls basketball team, which used a strong fourth quarter to defeat host Beverly 57-53 Tuesday night. The Tanners were led by do-it-all Sophia Coburn, who recorded 15 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists. Also contributing were Aliana Ryan (15 points, 5 steals), Olivia Gaynor (11 points), Lizzie Bettencourt (10 rebounds), and Avery Bettencourt (8 rebounds).

A one-point game (19-18) at halftime, Classical turned up the pressure in the second half with defense leading the way. Deleisha Perez-Vazquez compiled nine steals, while Mia Duncan held Revere’s top scorer to eight points.
“Without her defensive effort, it might’ve been a different game,” Classical coach Tom Sawyer said of Duncan.
Divine Egbuta (21 points, 10 rebounds) and Evelyn Diaz (14 points) did offensive damage for the Lady Rams, who improved to 5-3.
“We gave up 50 (points) to them last time and 37 this time,” Sawyer said. “It’s truly a team game and we got contributions up and down the lineup. It’s a great night because the JV (junior varsity) team had a come-from-behind victory as well.”

Anna Kanders scored a career-high 33 points to go with five assists as the Big Blue (7-4) rattled off another win. Cecilia Tripp also netted a career-high with 18 points, while Sam Ward poured in seven points and seven rebounds.

Swampscott improved to 10-1 after a defensive clinic against the Fishermen. Teddy O’Neill led the scoring department with 18 points, while Connor Chiarello added 14 points and five assists. Michael Lutko (11 points, 6 rebounds) and Dean Collins (8 points) also played well.

The Tigers delivered some positives, but dropped a close meet in their home pool. Addisyn Brown secured first place in the 500 free, while Filipe Oliveira, Colin Newhall, Hunter Flores, and Brown dropped a “very close” 400 relay, according to coach John Hogan.
“We had many second places, but the difference was they had more first places,” Hogan said.

Classical fell in Medford despite strong swimming from Cate Bushway, who improved her time in the 200 free and 500 free. David Gamero found success in the 100 fly, while the 200 medley relay team of Jason Silva, Mohammed Sherata, Gamero, and Henry Limkol delivered “a great second-place finish,” according to coach Denise Silva.
“We had some strong performances,” Denise Silva said.
