Lynn Tech’s boys basketball team defeated Blue Hills Tech 55-48 Saturday and captured the middle-tier vocational championship. The Tigers, on home hardwood, built a 27-20 first-half cushion and improved to 14-7.
Giovanni Jean did a little bit of everything with 25 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Also producing were Andy Batista (15 points, 4 assists) and Travis Sanchez (10 points, 4 steals).
The Tigers, ranked seventh in Division 4, will host No. 26 Amesbury or No. 39 Hampshire Regional in the state tournament (TBD).
TRACK AND FIELD
In Saturday’s Meet of Champions, held at The Track at New Balance in Boston, St. Mary’s Kelsey Kwiatek finished ninth in her heat with a mile time of 5:12.17. She ran the 2-mile in 11:37.95.
Saugus’ Destiny Okoye (5-02) placed fourth in high jump, while Swampscott’s Annabelle Averett ran the mile in 5:13.3 and Marblehead’s Marrietta O’Connell completed the 2-mile in 11:19.99.
High jumpers Clark Roszell (6-02) and Colin Burke (6-02) impressed among Marblehead boys. St. John’s Prep’s Mateo DeOrio placed fourth in the 1,000m after clocking 2:38.
WRESTLING
St. John’s Prep finished third in the Division 1 state championship meet Friday and Saturday at North Andover High. James Lally (144) and Sam Josey (190) were Eagles’ winners. Will LaCallee (150) placed fourth. Ben Schumacher (126), Charlie Moore (165), and Bryant Mason (215) placed seventh in their respective weight classes.
In Division 2, at Whitman-Hanson High, Saugus/Peabody placed eighth. Michael Maraio (150) led the way with a fourth-place finish. Cesar Cruz (165) finished fifth and Jake Murray (120) seventh. JJ Figueroa (190) and Jackson Deleidi (132) placed seventh. Marblehead/Swampscott’s Liam O’Brien (138) took third.
Lynnfield/North Reading finished 15th in Division 3 at Gloucester High. Nathan Barstow (113) led the way with a third-place finish. Jakob Hulett (126) secured fifth. Zack Morse (215) finished sixth and Jason Kouyoumdjian (120) seventh.
Marblehead/Swampscott’s Anna Cruikshank (165) finished fourth in Saturday’s Division 1 girls state championship at North Andover High.
