You know what I’ve been thinking? Big-time players make big-time plays — and show up for big-time games.
The hot hand has been with Grant Neal, a standout junior on Lynnfield’s boys basketball team. He led the Pioneers against KIPP Academy in the regular-season finale, then followed with a dominant performance against Ludlow in the Division 3 state tournament.
Lynnfield, which wrapped its regular season with a 16-4 record, defeated KIPP 73-50 behind Neal’s 27 points. From tough finishes to contested jumpers, he had it going.
From there, in do-or-die action, Neal led his team in points (21) and rebounds (13) as Lynnfield cruised to a 57-47 win in the preliminary round.
Better yet, he scored Lynnfield’s final 13 points to put a lid on Ludlow.
“He’s been doing that all year, so it’s no surprise to me,” said Lynnfield coach John Bakopolus after Wednesday’s win. “He’s been our guy all year. We rely on him and he always answers. He deserves all the recognition and credit he’s been getting, so I’m happy for him.”
Next up for No. 17 Lynnfield (17-4) is Saturday’s road game against No. 16 Greater New Bedford RVTHS (13-8). Tip-off is slated for 6:30 p.m.
Grant, good week.
