Saugus’ softball season was underway on Tuesday, but it didn’t go as planned. The Sachems lost 18-2 across five innings against visiting Manchester-Essex.

“We’ve seen better days,” said Saugus coach Steve Almquist. “We took it on the chin today.”

Saugus allowed eight runs in the first inning and committed nine total errors.

Eighth grader Hannah Strout (2-for-2, 2 RBI) impressed in her first varsity outing. Also contributing for the Sachems were Alannah Duong, Sofia McCarrier, Maria Silva, and Ari Chianca, all of whom recorded hits.

“We’ll bounce back,” Almquist said. “We have Swampscott at home tomorrow (4:30 p.m.).”

Marblehead ace Tessa Francis — last season’s Northeastern Conference Player of the Year — picked up where she left off last season, securing a complete-game victory. She allowed just two hits and recorded 11 strikeouts for the Magicians (1-0).

Swampscott’s Tyler Ostroff scored the game-winning goal with 18 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter as the Big Blue edged Marblehead at Piper Field. The ensuing face-off was controlled by Marblehead, but a ground ball was scooped by Swampscott’s Jack Duffy as time ticked away.

Lynnfield 17
Amesbury 8

Lynnfield (1-1) bounced back from Monday’s loss and defeated Amesbury in enemy territory. Matt Falzarano led the way with four goals and two assists, while John Powers scored twice alongside three assists.

Steve Morse (11 saves) and CJ Anderson (11-for-13 face-offs) caught eyes, as did defenseman Brendan Driscoll, who did a little bit of everything with two goals, an assist, and eight ground balls.

St. John’s Prep 13
Malden Catholic 0

After scoring 13 goals in Saturday’s season-opening win, St. John’s (2-0) repeated itself with another dominating performance. The visiting Eagles built a 10-0 halftime lead and were led by Thias Tolo (3 goals, assist), Cam Mitchell (2 goals, 2 assists), and Josh Barton (goal, 2 assists).

Postponed due to weather/field conditions:

St. Mary’s at Gloucester (softball)
Nashoba Valley Tech at Lynn Tech (softball)
St. Mary’s at Lowell Catholic (boys tennis)
Saugus at Everett (girls tennis)
Bishop Fenwick at Lynnfield (girls tennis)
