Roundup: Big contributions for Big Blue on the lacrosse field

Joey Barrett

April 15, 2026 by Joey Barrett

Talk about being hit from all angles.

Swampscott’s boys lacrosse team clipped Salem 18-3 at Blocksidge Field with nine players scoring goals. John Von Barta (5 goals, 2 assists) led the way, followed offensively by Tyler Ostroff (goal), Ollie Braham (2 goals, assist), Emerson Joy (2 goals, 3 assists), Will Rowe (assist), Jason Rothwell (2 goals, 3 assists), John Marino (3 goals), John Goldovt (goal), Will Ficken (goal, assist), and Eli Cobbett (goal).

Alex Colton made nine saves for the Big Blue, who built an 8-1 halftime lead and never let the Witches score more than one goal in a period.

Denim Dembro tucked a pair of goals and John Briggs ripped another, but the Jets (2-3) couldn’t keep up with Medford’s high-powered offense.

Bishop Stang 15
St. Mary’s 8

The Spartans (1-4) received strong games from Finn Racki (3 goals) and Sal Brogan (2), but met their match at Manning Field.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Swampscott 16
Salem 3

Swampscott’s (5-1) high offensive output continued against the Witches. Bridget Urbano (4 goals, 4 assists) led the attack, followed by Cecelia Tripp, Lea Beatrice, and Victoria Pierro, all of whom netted hat tricks.

Lynnfield 21
Essex Tech 6

Two days after scoring 11 goals, Lynnfield’s (3-3) Hayden Valiton netted another nine to help clip the Hawks. Jordan Calichman (5 goals) and Ava Damiani (4 goals, 4 assists) were right there with her.

St. Mary’s 18
Bishop Stang 14

St. Mary’s (5-0) continued its hot start. Shaye Denning led the way with seven goals and Ava Nason chipped in another five. Emma Gustin made 11 saves between the pipes, while Keira Twomey and Nason combined for 16 draw controls.

Peabody 12
Marblehead 11

Zoe Dwyer (5 goals) and Addie Co Peeps (3) highlighted Marblehead’s offense, but the Magicians were edged and fell to 2-4.

“Obviously, a loss hurts, but we are still learning and taking away something from every game,” said Marblehead coach Annie Madden. “Again, we are getting stronger each day and now, it’s back to practice on Thursday. Senior captains Chloe Rowland and Avery Wysor, defensively, made the momentum shift and put us back on the board. Putting all the pieces together will help us against Saugus come Monday.”

BASEBALL

Gloucester 7
Swampscott 0

Michael Collins recorded Swampscott’s only two hits as the Big Blue dipped to 3-2. Jami Ford (2 1/3 IP, 5 ER) picked up the loss, while Tommy Cuttle pitched well in relief and allowed just one run.

Marblehead 8
Beverly 6

A back-and-forth Northeastern Conference clash saw the Magicians (3-2) escape. Doing a bit of everything was Marblehead’s Owen Coyne, who batted 4-for-4 and pitched five-plus innings.

Saugus 4
Salem 0

Saugus took care of business behind pitcher Jordan Rodriguez, who went the distance and recorded 15 strikeouts. Helping his cause were Brayden Crawford (1-for-2, R, 2 SB), Tre Riley (1-for-3, RBI), Eli Fialho (H), Donny Santostefano (H), and Chris Mazin (2 SB). Rodriguez also stole a base.

Medford 3
Lynn Classical 1

A 1-1 game late, Medford (1-4) plated two runs in the seventh inning to escape with a win. Emerson Leira and Mark Walsh (10 K) played well for the Rams (2-4).

SOFTBALL

St. Mary’s 17
Bishop Fenwick 7

Eight first-inning runs did the trick for visiting St. Mary’s, which upped its record to 3-1. Abbey Sousa (3-for-4) delivered a monster game with three runs, four RBI, and a homer. Chloe Mahoney (2-for-2) tapped home plate twice alongside two RBI and two doubles, while Aliza Crean-Oviedo (5 IP, R, 7 K) earned the win.

Medford 20
Lynn Classical 0

Despite hits from Chloe Corbett (2B), Brooke Braswell, and Olivia Rodriguez, the Lady Rams (2-2) had no answer for Medford.

“Medford hit the ball hard — all over the park — and made some nice plays to keep us off the scoreboard,” said Classical coach Joe Morin.

Revere 8
Lynn English 0

English’s Annika Johansson recorded seven strikeouts, while Arlette Castillo, Johansson, and Amelia Serino collected hits. That said, Revere’s 14 hits were too much for the Lady Bulldogs (0-4) to handle.

Saugus 7
Salem 5

Saugus (4-3) put together back-to-back wins after defeating Salem. Sofia McCarrier (7 IP, 3 ER, 2 BB, 9 K) impressed in the circle and helped her own cause with a 2-for-2 performance at the plate. Chipping in for the Sachems were Sydney Deleidi (1-for-3, 3B, 3 RBI), Hannah Strout (H, R), Aubrey DeMonte (H, 2 R), Maria Silva (2B, RBI), and Jenna O’Donnell, who played “stellar at second base,” according to coach Steve Almquist.

“The eighth graders are really stepping up, as well as our upperclassmen,” Almquist said.

Marblehead 3
Beverly 0

Marblehead’s Tessa Francis (5 H, 7 K) delivered a shutout and contributed offensively with a double. Avery Sheridan (H) made two “great defensive plays,” according to coach Johnny Gold, while Kate Andriano reached base twice alongside solid defense. Ashley Mortensen, Hailey Schmitt, and Isabel Mortensen compiled hits for the Magicians (5-1).

BOYS TENNIS

Lynn Classical 4
Revere 1

Classical’s Jeremy Lima and Henry Limkol secured singles wins, while the doubles pairings of Andy Lim/Yosgert Ortiz and Jean Carlo Garcia/Niroyaya Mayukh helped supply the Rams (1-3) win No. 1.

GIRLS TENNIS

Lynnfield 5
Pentucket 0

Lily Alves, Kathleen Brown, and Olivia Asaad went 1-2-3 in singles play as Lynnfield improved to 5-1. The duos of Vicky McCrann/Emma Wagon and Charlotte Rose/Charlotte Beccia took care of doubles business.

VOLLEYBALL

Lynn Classical 3
Somerville 0

Classical (7-1) remained perfect in the Greater Boston League (4-0) through set scores of 25-23, 26-24, and 26-24. Leading the Rams were Kenzel Lantano (23 assists, 4 kills, 6 aces, 5 digs), Riches Tep (8 kills, 4 digs), and Ali Mejdi (5 kills, 3 aces, 6 digs).

“We were really pleased with Kavyn Kheav, who got his first start tonight and played really well,” said coach Chris LeBlanc. “We were asking a lot of him tonight. He’s all of 5-4 and we stuck him in the middle against a 6-5 kid and he really held his own. Kenzel really stepped up and led tonight as well — excellent all night serving and distributing the volleyball.”
