LYNN — With a “defense-wins-games” approach making its way to Lynn English, the school has found its next girls basketball coach. Stephanie Vasquez will command the Bulldogs next winter, replacing Sydney Brennan.
“Just excited,” said Vasquez, who grew up in Salem and lives in Lynn. “I want to create some stability with the Lynn English girls basketball team and start building the culture back up over there.”
Vasquez played for St. Mary’s (Class of 2007) from seventh grade until her sophomore year before transferring to Salem High, where she played her junior and senior seasons. She cracked St. Mary’s varsity roster as an eighth grader.
With coaching stops at St. Mary’s Middle School, KIPP Academy, Lynn English, Essex Tech, and Salem State University, Vasquez is ready for tip-off with the Bulldogs.
“I just like the (Lynn English) culture from the first time I coached there with Rachael Bradley back in 2014,” Vasquez said. “I saw it was open, took my shot, and got the job.”
Vasquez describes herself as an “old-school” coach who values the basics.
“I stick to defense wins games and the offense will come gradually,” she said. “I want to base my culture through communication and build confidence within these girls, create good habits, and teach them things that are going to transfer to life in general.”
The Bulldogs finished 2-16 last season.
“We’re going to take it one game at a time and see where it takes us,” Vasquez said.
