Weekend roundup: Truly a Spartan Tournament

St. Mary’s baseball team put on a show at Fraser Field Saturday, defeating Marblehead 11-7 to win the Spartan Tournament. Pope Francis clipped Masconomet in the consolation game.

For the Spartans (7-1), who rattled off their seventh consecutive win, Jacob Peterson was named Most Valuable Player. He batted 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI, while Lucas Downey (2 2/3 IP, H, 3 K) earned the win.

Tim Wales smoked a two-run homer for Marblehead, which led 6-1 and 7-6 heading into the sixth inning. But seven errors plagued the Magicians (5-4).

St. Mary’s travels to face Cardinal Spellman Monday at 3:30 p.m. Marblehead hosts Salem Tuesday with first pitch slated for 4:30 p.m.

SOFTBALL

St. Mary’s 8
Malden Catholic 7

Despite trailing 6-2 in the fifth inning, St. Mary’s (5-2) escaped Malden Catholic’s grasp Saturday. Olivia DiSessa crushed a pair of home runs and recorded three RBI. Aliza Crean-Oviedo earned the win, while Catherine Newbury recorded the save.

GIRLS TENNIS

Swampscott 5
St. Mary’s 0

Nikki Carr, Ana Eccles, and Janielle De La Cruz went 1-2-3 in singles to catapult host Swampscott over St. Mary’s. Ava and Alexia O’Donnell won first doubles, while Sasha Fafel and Eve Byrne took care of second doubles for the Big Blue.
