The varsity baseball teams of St. Mary’s, Pope Francis, Marblehead, and Masconomet kicked off the Spartan Tournament Friday, held at Fraser Field in Lynn.
In Game 1, Marblehead (5-3) defeated Masconomet (5-4) 11-9 in a high-scoring showdown. Starting the tournament in style, the Magicians plated three runs in the first inning, four in the second, and three in the third.
Masconomet clawed its way back from an 11-2 deficit, even having two men on base during a two-run game in the seventh inning.
But in the end, Marblehead’s Greyson Leventhal stayed hot and roped four hits. Will Macrina, Cam Carneval, and Yanzel Fuentes split mound duties.
Game 2 saw St. Mary’s (6-1) clip Pope Francis (3-6) 5-3. Pitcher Brennan Malloy (7 H, 3 R, 6 K) continued to impress and secured his third win, while Josh Doney earned the save. Rolky Brea-Arias (2-for-3) smashed a home run to lead the Spartans’ offense.
The championship game between Marblehead and St. Mary’s is slated for Saturday at 3 p.m. The consolation game between Masconomet and Pope Francis begins at noon. Both remain at Fraser Field.
