LYNN — A soup sold by Whole Foods Market Kitchen and Lynn-based Kettle Cuisine was recalled after finding shellfish contamination.
The soup, a minestrone, was recalled on Thursday, May 21, when an official found in-store that a single 24-ounce cup of the soup contained shrimp not listed on the label. Over the last week, Whole Foods stores across 17 states, including Massachusetts, have taken this soup off shelves.
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), shellfish allergies can be extremely dangerous and are often life-threatening for those who have them. The most common signs of an allergic reaction due to shellfish are anaphylaxis (swollen throat or tightness), choking, shock, hives, and vomiting.
The FDA has seen no reports of illness due to this soup since the recall began, however they are still advising customers to return their purchase if they are at risk of illness due to a shellfish allergy. If you have experienced any symptoms due to the Kettle Cuisine minestrone soup contamination, you should contact both Whole Foods and the FDA.
The recalled soup comes in a clear plastic cup marked with Lot Code 1762181 and UPC 099482502065, which can be found on the back label. Kettle Cuisine had labeled the use-by date as May 27, 2026. Additionally, the FDA stated that no other soup has been affected by this contamination.
The FDA has advised that customers who have purchased this soup should return it to the store it was originally purchased from for a full refund.
